Privacy Policy

Effective Date: 15 September 2026

ClearNews ("ClearNews," "we," "us," or "our") is a clean, ad-free news reader that gathers headlines from public RSS feeds. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information when you use it.

In short, ClearNews does not require an account and does not ask for your name or email address. Your topic and source preferences stay on your device. We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand, in aggregate, how the app is used so we can improve it. We do not sell your data and we do not show ads.

1. Information We Collect

We do not collect personal information such as your name, email address, or phone number, because ClearNews has no user accounts and no sign-up.

To make the app work and remember your choices, the following is stored only on your device using standard on-device storage: whether you have completed onboarding, the topics and sources you follow, your reading preference, and a cached copy of the source catalogue so the app works offline. This never leaves your device, and it is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its storage.

Through Google Analytics for Firebase, the following may be collected and processed in aggregate: in-app activity such as screen views and sessions, app information and performance data such as app version and crashes, device and other identifiers such as a Firebase app-instance ID and device model, and an approximate location (country or region) derived from your IP address. We do not collect precise or GPS location.

2. How We Use Information

We use on-device data to run core features, remember your interests and sources, and let the app work offline. We use analytics data to measure how many people use the app, see which features and screens are popular, and find and fix problems. Analytics is processed in aggregate and is not used to identify you personally.

3. Network Requests

ClearNews fetches content directly on your device. To display the news, it makes requests to publishers' public RSS feeds, to image servers and content delivery networks for thumbnails, and to a public configuration file that lists available topics and sources.

As with any app that connects to the internet, the servers receiving these requests can see your device's IP address and basic technical details, because that is a normal part of how internet requests work. ClearNews adds no personal identifiers to these requests, and we do not control the logs of those third-party servers.

4. Opening Articles

When you open a full article, ClearNews loads the publisher's own web page inside an in-app browser view or your device's browser. Once you are on a publisher's page, that publisher's own privacy policy applies. To improve readability and privacy, the app blocks common advertising and tracking scripts on these pages where it can, but we cannot guarantee a publisher does not collect data on its own site.

5. Sharing of Information

Analytics data is processed by Google as our service provider. For details, see Google's Privacy Policy and Firebase Privacy and Security. Beyond this, we do not sell or share your information. The app can share an article through your device's native share sheet, but only when you choose to, and that content goes to the app you pick, not to us.

6. Advertising

ClearNews contains no advertising SDKs. We do not show ads in the app, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not track you across other apps or websites for advertising.

7. Children's Privacy

ClearNews is a general-audience news reader and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Data Security and Retention

Your preferences are stored only on your own device. Analytics data is held and processed by Google in line with their retention settings. Network requests use secure connections (HTTPS) where the source supports them.

9. Your Choices

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
